The general idea of marine waste pump out systems is always the same, and the instructions are pretty similar for the most part. First timers with these systems might feel a little bit intimidated, so here are some things that you should know to make sure that you are confident in your ability to use the pump systems at marinas when you have docked your boat.
First of all, it is important to relax! Most people say that there isnt much more to it than there is to pumping gas. Dont be afraid to ask the dock staff for help with anything you may need; that is what they are there for. Even though the general idea behind all systems is the same, the machinery and the systems themselves do vary a little bit. For the most part, the marine waste pumps have simple instructions in visible places either on or near the pump, so you should first look for pictures, instructions, or diagrams to help you. If you dont see anything posted, again, make sure that you ask a manager or deck staff person to post them, or even hand you a copy of the instructions. Sometimes, there are deck staff members on hand that will pump out your tank for you, so you may want to find out if this is a possibility too. If you do have a staff person do the work for you, dont walk away from it take it as an opportunity to learn to do it yourself for the next time
or when you are at another marina.
Unscrew the cap from your boats deck waste fitting. Take the pump hose nozzle and insert it into your deck fitting, just as you would begin to pump gasoline into your car. Go ahead and turn on the pump. If there is a hose valve, make sure that you open it to start the suctioning. Keep an eye on your boats waste level while you are using the marine waste pump system. When waste is no longer visible through your sight glass, you can close the valve on the hose and remove it from the deck fitting. Flush out your pump hose with water for about 15 seconds, and with the valve open you should submerse the hose into a bucket of water to rinse it. You can also rinse your boats waste tank with water then pump it dry.
Close the valve, and make sure that you turn the pump off or it has shut off with a timer. Make sure that you replace your deck fitting properly! These are the general steps that will give you an idea of what the gist of a marine waste pump out system will do and how to get it done smoothly and easily.
