Today, the installation of solar systems is a necessity, to harness the energy of the environment, and to reduce pollution. So how does a solar system work? There will be modules planted in your roof, their solar cells will convert sunlight directly into DC power. The inverter converts this DC power into AC power, which you use in your home. If it produces excess electricity, more electricity than you need for your home, then the utility you have at home might have net metering, or might allow the excess power to return to the grid. One can get a system with a battery backup as well. It’s important to remember that your system will not work at night, because sunlight must be present for the solar modules’ power production. Power is drawn from your utility, at night. The system will work on cloudy days too, but will be producing less electricity.

There are two kinds of solar systems available. One type gives power to your home when there is daylight, but there is no power should there be an outage. There is another kind that not only gives power to your home when there is daylight, but also has battery backup, which can provide power in case of an outage. But you will not be getting hot water, you’ll need a solar thermal panel for that. In the solar system, the solar modules will be converting sunlight into electricity, which will operate pumps, motors, appliances, and other kinds of devices. Also, you will not be able to generate heat for your home, through the solar electric system.

These solar systems work on most homes. All you need is direct sunlight. Ensure that you have a sunny place on your roof, measuring about 120 square feet. Avoid shade of any kind, by trees, buildings, etc. These destroy the effectiveness of the solar system. Ideally, you should have a south-facing roof area. You must remember that each cell in the solar module needs full and direct sunlight to work properly. Even a small bit being shaded means that the utility value is lowered.

Also, here’s a quick tip. If you’re moving into a new house, or installing a new roof, the situation’s ideal. Because when you lay the roof, you should install flashable moutning brackets – these provide high protection from leakage. Don’t use reflectors or mirrors near the solar panels, thinking that they will increase the efficiency of electricity generation. All you need is direct sunlight. Also, if you see that a solar system on your roof is impractical for whatever reason, you have the option of using a ground-mount, or a pergola application to make it more effective. And if you live in an apartment, or live in a rented house, you can’t get the solar system. The installation is only open to those who own property, because a contractual agreement needs to be entered into. The amount of power your solar system generates will vary on the climate, your geographical location, the size of your system, and whether it has battery backup.
